(KTNV) -- Action News anchor Steve Wolford had a chance to fly along with Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's search and rescue team in 2006.

According to the report, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department maintains a small fleet of helicopters.

Those helicopters are used in their fight against crime and also for rescue missions.

The search and rescue team performs dozens of mountain and desert rescues each year in Clark County.

The team and the nearly 60 civilian volunteers that support them go through rigourous training.

The team also talks about being the only team that flies rescue missions at night and said during the report that they would never call off a search because of darkness.

Las Vegas police officer David Vanbuskirk lost his life Monday night during a rescue misson at night on Mount Charleston.
