Las Vegas Marines honor those killed in training exercise

CREATED Mar. 23, 2013

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Another tragedy struck the Marines this week, this time in Virginia.

Authorities in Quantico said a Marine shot and killed two fellow Marines before taking his own life in barracks.

The victims were a man and a woman.

All worked as training personnel at the Officer Candidates School.

This tragedy comes only days after a training accident claimed the lives of seven Marines at Nevada's Hawthorne Army Depot.

Memorial services were held on Friday to honor those men, including a vigil at the Leatherneck Bar and Grill on Spring Mountain in Las Vegas.

Several generations of retired and active duty Marines were joined by their families to remember their fallen comrades.

Military investigators are still trying to figure out why a mortar shell detonated while it was still in the firing tube.

Until they have an idea of how it happened, military officials have discontinued the use of similar equipment.
