Smith Center celebrating one-year anniversary

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- It has been one year since The Smith Center for the Performing Arts opened its doors to the Southern Nevada community in downtown Las Vegas.

In celebration of that opening, The Smith Center is hosting more than 1,500 elementary school students for a special performance of "The Stinky Cheese Man and other Fairly Stupid Tales."

The Smith Center opened its doors on March 10, 2012. It is the flagship of the 61-acre Symphony Park development in downtown Las Vegas.

So far, the Smith Center has hosted more than 220 volunteer-led tours of its art-deco campus bringing more than 5,500 people through its doors.

The Nevada Legislature honored The Smith Center on March 10 for "enabling Southern Nevada to take its place on an international stage, celebrating artistic excellence, education and culture from around the world."

There have been more than 450 performances at The Smith Center since it opened ranging. Shows have feature classical music, jazz, dance companies, brilliant lectures and Broadway productions.

In addition, there have been more than 20 performances by its resident companies the Las Vegas Philharmonic and Nevada Ballet Theater.

Special events at the venue have included weddings, fundraisers, private receptions and dinners, meetings, graduation ceremonies and presentations.

All combined, more than 47,000 guests have attended a performance or event at The Smith Center since it opened.

In recognition of its first anniversary, The Smith Center also launched a new, interactive feature on its website encouraging visitors to explore.

The virtual tour of the five-acre campus features stunning photos and video galleries allowing patrons to learn more about the architecture, event spaces and entertainment offerings.
