Man remains in critical condition after shooting by North Vegas police

CREATED Mar. 4, 2013

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) -- North Las Vegas police say a 52-year-old man is hospitalized in critical condition after officers returned fire as they answered a call that he was suicidal in his home.

Officer Chrissie Coon says Robert Crampton fired at least one shot and was wounded several times in the legs, hand and lower body in return fire about 7 p.m. Sunday at a home near Ann Road and Valley Drive.

Coon says police later recovered two handguns and several swords from the home.

She says officers entered because they thought Crampton was injured inside.

Police had been called by two women who rent a room. They said Crampton was trying to hurt himself.

Coon says the two officers are on paid leave pending an investigation. Their names should be made public Tuesday.
