Club owner and band member arrested after deadly fire at Brazil nightclub
(KTNV) -- CNN is now reporting that the owner of the club and a member of the band that was playing when the fire broke out have been arrested.
233 people died in a nightclub in the Brazilian town of Santa Maria over the weekend.
Many of the victims died in or near the bathrooms.
One lawmaker has described "piles" of bodies in the bathrooms. It has also been revealed that many security guards stopped people from leaving when the fire broke out.
A fire official says the guards thought if people left, they would skip out on their bills.
When they blocked one exit, panic broke out.
Authorities still have not been able to identify all of the victims.
Also, workers combing through the remains of the nightclub are describing the eerie sound of ringing cellphones.
Many of the victims were young college students.
The club was only designed to hold 1,000 people but it has been reported that there was close to 2,000 people in the club at the time of the fatal fire.
It has also been reported that the band that was performing before the fire was using pyrotechnics. Investigators have not yet identified a cause for the fire.
