Local police officers training for 300-mile bike ride

CREATED Jan. 26, 2013

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- More than a dozen cops from Clark County are preparing to head to the East Coast.

They're not fighting crime, they're raising awareness of the price paid to keep us all safe.

They are training now for the "Police Unity Tour." It's a 300-mile bike ride from New Jersey to the nation's capitol.

The annual event raises money for the families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, and honors the sacrifices they make every day to keep us safe.

"They're our neighbors. They may be the people next door to us, and they're just normal people who hurt and care just like we do," said Dee Taylor, Police Unity Tour.

More than a dozen officers will ride in this year's event.

Each has to raise more than $1,700 to participate.

A "Police Unity Tour" fundraiser will be held Feb. 8 at Sam's Town.
