Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The Clark County Coroner's Office has identified the police lieutenant who shot his wife and son before turning the gun on himself Monday morning.
The Las Vegas Metro Police lieutenant was 52-year-old Hans Pieter Walters.
His wife was 46-year-old Kathryn Walters. His son was 5-year-old Maximilian Walters.
Police were called to the Walters' home on Esther Drive in Boulder City at about 8:20 a.m. Monday morning after Lt. Walters called 911. He told an operator that he had killed his family and was about to set his house on fire.
Boulder City police rushed to the scene. When they arrived, Lt. Walters was uncooperative. After a verbal exchange outside the home, Walters went back inside and committed suicide.
SWAT units entering the home found Lt. Walters, his wife and child dead of gunshot wounds to the head.
The Henderson Police Department is handling the investigation.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Doug Gillespie held a press conference Monday afternoon, voicing his condolences to those close to the family and vowing to aid Henderson police in the investigation, should they need it.
Lt. Walters was with LVMPD for more than 20 years. His wife served the department for 13 years.
