Doctors discover new way to tell if patient wakes during surgery
(KTNV) -- It can be a terrifying event for anyone who has surgery.
Until now, doctors had no way to know if a patient suddenly woke up in the middle of surgery.
It happens to thousands of people each year. The patient usually has no way to tell the doctors that he or she are awake.
Now, there is a new way to monitor patients.
Doctors at the University of Wisconsin believe they can stimulate the brain with an electrical current during surgery. If the current spreads to the patient's brain, it means the patient is awake and aware of the operation.
