Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Jake Howell, the 18-year-old man arrested for bring an unloaded assault rifle to his former Las Vegas high school, appeared in court this morning.

According to initial reports, Howell waived his preliminary hearing and is planning on pleading guilty to lesser charges next week after cutting a deal with the district attorney.

Howell was initially facing five charges of possession of a dangerous weapon and, if convicted, would have spent several years in jail.

Howell was arrested at his former school on Dec. 21 with an SKS rifle, ammunition, a 16-inch bayonet and three survival-style knives.

Although Howell told investigators that he wanted to be prepared in case society collapsed, he denied wanting to harm anyone at the school or school property.

Howell has also been linked to another teenager currently facing federal weapon charges in Las Vegas.
