Think tank releases report on Las Vegas Metro Police Department

Think tank releases report on Las Vegas Metro Police Department

By Molly Waldron. CREATED Jan 4, 2013

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A Los Angeles based think tank released results of a study on the Las Vegas Metropolitan police department on Friday.

The Consortium for Police Leadership in Equity spent three years studying Metro.

The group focused its research on use of force, deadly force and internal equity by conducting interviews and surveys. They also gathered complaints and compiled data.

The study revealed that disengagement and resentment at the Department and from the community was most likely to predict disparities in use of force, primarily against certain minority groups.

On the positive side, the report stated that overall, there were low levels of bias when it came to use of force.

The CPLE recommends that Metro integrate diversity training into operational responsibilities training. They also recommend that metro prioritize use of force training, create an officers' advisory council and reward those who exemplify excellence in diversity and inclusion.

CLPE began talks with Metro in 2009, and began their research in 2010.
