Dirty Dining: America Restaurant inside New York New York
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Another MGM Resort restaurant has landed on Dirty Dining. And as Contact 13 Chief Investigator Darcy Spears reports, it's the second time this Fall that one of the resort chain's Strip eateries has fallen just one demerit shy of being shut down by the Clark County Health District.
In late September, it was Andre's French restaurant inside the Monte Carlo. This time, we're next door at New York-New York.
And this is one thing Frank Sinatra probably wouldn't have wanted to be a part of.
The sign in front of New York-New York's America Restaurant asks patrons to pardon their mess while they enhance their dining room. But inspectors were more focused on the kitchen, which received a 40-demerit "C" grade. 41 demerits would have shut the place down.
Inspectors found no imminent health hazards, but did write up a bunch of critical and major violations, including expired food. The veggie burgers had gone bad five days before the inspection date and various cheeses were past their prime as well.
America restaurant had to cease and desist selling undercooked fish until they could prove all the parasites in it had been destroyed.
They also had problems with temperatures. From a big bucket of wieners to sausages to other stuff we couldn't identify from the pictures, a bunch of potentially hazardous foods were at improper temperatures and had to be tossed.
Also, two refrigerators were red-tagged and taken out of service because they weren't holding food at the proper temperature.
Health inspectors say storing utensils in a pan of water in a prep sink is not allowed. America got written up for that as well as a chef wiping his spatula on a dirty wiping cloth.
Inspectors also saw an employee placing a pan of raw chicken on the same cutting board with open slices of bread.
We spoke with the restaurant's Senior Vice President who wasn't too keen on the whole concept of Dirty Dining.
He wouldn't let our cameras in and wouldn't give us an interview.
But he did say the health report is not indicative of who they are at America Restaurant and he even fired the head chef over it.
He sent a written statement which says, "Our company works diligently with the Southern Nevada Health District. America was re-inspected within 24 hours and received zero demerits. Although we repudiate the association with Dirty Dining to its fullest, we must nevertheless recognize shortcomings on this inspection which we quickly rectified. The report correctly indicates there was never any imminent health hazard at our restaurant."
