Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A local mother and stepfather are accused in the beating death of a 7-year-old child.
According to police paperwork, mother Dina Palmer and her husband Markiece Palmer took custody of Dina's son a few months ago at their residence on South Decatur near West Desert Inn Road.
On November 29, police say the child was rushed to University Medical Center when he was found unresponsive. Doctors told police the child had suffered brain swelling, bruising and open wounds that appeared to be the result of abuse.
The child later died from his injuries.
An arrest report states that Markiece admitted to detectives that he hit the child on several occasions using a belt, a spatula, his hand and a wooden paddle. He said the child's mother, Dina, was present on all occasions.
The night before the child was hospitalized, an arrest report stated that Markiece shook the child after a dispute over homework, at which point he ran down the stairs, falling and striking his head. His mother also allegedly hit him two or three times.
The next morning, the child was unresponsive. That's when Dina called 911 and the child was hospitalized before later dying.
A search of the family's home and interviews with the suspects led police to arrest both Dina Palmer and Markiece Palmer.
Both are charged with child abuse and murder.
