Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Americans are expected to spend about $1.5 billion online today.
Cyber Monday started at the stroke of midnight with retailers posting major discounts on their websites.
Retailers like Lands Eng, GAP, Old Navy and Banana Republic are offering 30 percent off everything on their websites and Express and Abercrombie are offering 40 percent.
Other retailers offering discounts include big stores like Macy's, Kohl's and Sears. In addition to discounts, many of those are offering two-for-one deals and free shipping.
Amazon.com and locally-based Zappos are also offering great deals. This is their biggest day of the year for online sales.
Amazon is offering smartphones with plans at 50 percent off today only.
According to the National Retail Federation, 85 percent of online retailers will offer special promotions today.
The NRF is also estimating that overall retail sales in November and December will be up at least 4.1 percent this year.
Keep in mind that although online shopping definitely has its perks, it also has its drawbacks.
And those are namely an increase in cyber crime, online scams and identity theft.
So, shop smart and use your credit card instead of a debit card.
And always check your statements.
In addition, never enter your social security number or give out your passwords for your email accounts.
Experts also say to make sure the website secure. Just look for "https" in the web address. The "s" lets you know it is a secure site.
