Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort opened for its 50th anniversary season on Friday.
The resort is in the midst of a $35 million expansion, constructing new lifts and new trails. But what they're most excited about is reaching out to a new audience.
Vanessa Rago brought her twins up the mountain to show them snow for the first time.
"It's fun to expose them to it and have them experience something different from the valley," she says.
Her two-year olds are too young to try out the runs this year. But there were plenty of other youngsters on skis and snowboards. Resort officials are hoping to see more of them during this 50th anniversary season.
"What we're trying to do is re-introduce ourselves to that segment of the Vegas population, get the kids up here, get them introduced, get them outside, get them recreating," says Kevin Stickelman, president and general manager of LVSSR.
"We have totally re-tooled our ski and snowboard school this year. We have new programs geared towards kids and families."
The resort has also been constructing a new lift, specifically for beginners. They're hoping it will be open in the next couple months.
Rago, who grew up skiing in Vermont, says more people in Las Vegas should take advantage of the opportunity to play in the snow.
"There's so many people I've talked to who don't even come up here. And to me, it's something that everyone should come see. It's so different, so close, so easy to get here."
The resort says they've tried to keep their season pass prices low, so cost isn't the thing that keeps families away. They've also got a Lids for Kids program, giving away free helmets in the month of January. Go to www.skilasvegas.com for more information.
