Man shot by Washoe deputy booked on charges
RENO, Nev. (AP) -- A man shot and wounded by a Washoe County sheriff's deputy has been booked into jail following his release from a Reno hospital.
Police Tuesday said 27-year-old Michael Nelson Heil of Truckee, Calif., is charged with resisting an officer, hitchhiking, being a felon in possession of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.
Heil was shot Nov. 10 near the Gold Ranch Casino along Interstate 80 west of Reno.
Police say the deputy approached Heil for hitchhiking and because he resembled a stolen vehicle suspect. Investigators say Heil had a revolver in his clothing, and took off running when the unnamed deputy tried to arrest him.
Police say the deputy shot Heil when he believed he was reaching for the firearm.
The gun was later found in bushes.
