Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Police have arrested one suspect in connection with a shooting on the I-15. Police first thought it was a case of possible road rage, but to their surprise, the shooting was an alleged murder conspiracy.

It was early Wednesday morning when police said two suspects, 21-year-old Michael Bessey and 36-year-old Richard Pearson planned the attack. Their target - Michael's adoptive father Robert Bessey.

We were surprised to find out that it was actually family members who plotted to do this to one of their own members," Marcus Martin, LVMPD officer, said.

Police paperwork reveals the victim is in the midst of a messy divorce and Robert's $250,000 life insurance policy is at stake.

"We are not going to leave any stone unturned and they are looking for motive for anyone involved," Martin said.

Police said Robert's wife has said he's worth more dead than alive and their son Michael also threatened to kill him over the divorce.

On Wednesday, police said, Michael took that threat a step further and the two suspects tried to murder Robert on the I-15 South near Valley of Fire.

Police said the suspects waited for Robert on the side of the freeway, when they saw his car, the suspects sped up and shot Robert through the back window.

Police said Robert was shot in the back of the head, but he managed to pull over and call 911. Meantime, the two suspects drove to a gas station in Logandale where they were caught on camera - a key clue in this investigation.

Police later found the suspects car, a GMC Yukon with black rims and a white sticker. It's the same car Robert recalled seeing parked at his ex-wife's house.

On Friday evening, Robert's ex-wife didn't answer the door. It's the place where Robert's son lived after he was dishonorably discharged from the army for anger.

According to police, Robert's son told police Robert abused him and his mother.

Police arrested Michael for the shooting, but officers are still looking for Pearson, the second suspect and Robert's brother-in-law.
