Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- An elderly man is recovering after police say he was attacked and robbed near a busy shopping center.
Metro investigators say Frank Hernandez put an 82-year-old in harms way as the elderly man waited for the bus at Charleston and Decatur.
"A big-screen TV meant more to Hernandez than the 82-year-old person that was standing there with it, and he was not going to stop until he got what he wanted," said Sgt. Prokopios Ziros.
Sgt. Ziros says the 82-year-old was having car problems, so he took the bus to Walmart to get the new television he had been saving up for. After the man purchased the TV, he wheeled it in a shopping cart to the bus stop.
That's where, investigators say, Hernandez attacked the 82-year-old, and stole the TV. During the scuffle, the elderly man was knocked into the busy street, and Hernandez got away with the TV.
"The elderly man was actually run over by a vehicle that was coming through the area, not knowing what was going on," says Sgt. Ziros. "He had to be pulled-out from under the vehicle by good samaritans in the area."
The 82-year-old survived, but has a long road to recovery.
Police were able to track Hernandez down through witness descriptions, and surveillance video. He is currently in the Clark County Detention Center. He has already served jail time in California for five other felonies.
Detectives say this crime should serve as a reminder during the holiday shopping season, which is prime time for thieves to strike. Always be aware of your surroundings, and who's nearby.
