Family mourns death of 16-year-old Chaparral student
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The family of 16-year-old Mariel Mahuiztl, the teenager who died in a one car accident Monday can't believe she's gone.
The Chaparral High School sophomore was the passenger in a car being driven by her older 19-year-old brother. Family says he simply lost control of the vehicle. He was not seriously hurt.
Mariel was the youngest of five children.
She was learning to play the cello and was really close to her family.
Mariel was just weeks away from celebrating her 17th birthday.
Grief counselors have been at the school all week.
Family is holding a mass in honor of Mariel on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Church of Christ located at the corner of Torrey Pines and Flamingo.
An account has been set up under Mariel's name to help cover funeral expenses. Donors can contribute at any Wells Fargo bank location.
