Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- K-9 teams from across the country came to Las Vegas this weekend to compete in an event that would name the top dog and law enforcement agency in the country.
It was all bark and lots of bite at the 22nd annual K-9 Trials at the Orleans Arena. Entire families came to watch these canines show their obedience, agility and handler protection exercises. They got a chance to see how much hurt potential bad guys can face if they don't listen to the commands of their human partners.
These teams come from all over the United States but mostly California, Utah, Nevada and New Mexico. This year, there's even teams all the way from New York. This competition means a lot for the dogs and their handlers.
"If you come here and win top dog or top agency, that's bragging rights. I mean they get a little plaque and a trophy, but the thing is the bragging rights. Then you have to come back here and defend that. The guy who won last year, everybody's shooting for him this year," says Officer Sam Carillo, a canine handler with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
At the event, people got a chance to buy shirts and caps to help financially support the retirement of these canines. After all the hard work they put in, they get a chance to spend their lives just living a well-deserved dog life.
