Name of bus driver in Friday night crash released

CREATED Oct. 20, 2012

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- One person is dead and dozens more are injured after a tour bus goes off the road and crashes just outside of Kingman, Arizona near the Hoover Dam.

Several of those people were brought to area hospitals except for the driver who died on scene. The bus was on its way back from a day trip when it suddenly veered off the road.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety the 48 passengers were taken to Kingman Regional Medical Center and to UMC and other Las Vegas area hospitals for mostly non serious injuries. Six were admitted in serious condition but all passengers are expected to live.

The accident happened last night on U.S. 93 at about 8 when that tour bus was on the way back to Las Vegas from the Grand Canyon, filled with mostly Australians and two Americans, veered off the road and crashed. One victim tells Action News from her hospital room that she thinks the driver had a heart attack. She saw him close his eyes before he fell over.

"That's the cause of the initial crash. We do know the driver was deceased after the crash so he was alert and somewhat responsive, but still clutching his chest. That's why we believe it's a medical issue," says Officer Carrick Cook with the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Officials at the Arizona Department of Public Safety tell us they are starting to examine the bus, but don't expect to find anything wrong. They believe this accident was cause by the medical episode of the driver.
