Construction on Summerlin mall set to move forward
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The shell of a building untouched for years behind the Red Rock Resort is now expected to open as an outdoor shopping area in two years.
It's been called an eyesore; the product of an extreme economic downturn, but now the 'Shops at Summerlin' could soon become a reality.
"This is officially the restart of the regional retail center that you see behind us," Tom Warden with the Howard Hughes Corporation said.
The announcement came after Macy's signed on as the first of three department stores that will call the Shops at Summerlin home when it opens in 2014.
The project was stalled in 2008 because the developer ran into financial issues, and it's stood towering over nearby Summerlin neighborhoods ever since.
Homeowners nearby say they're excited to see the possibility of an increase in property value after the project is finally complete.
"The idea that they would have these kinds of shops and restaurants, entertainment venues and office space that close to home is something everyone's been kind of waiting for and tapping their toes for," Warden said. "Now it's finally underway."
