Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- How many times do you drive around the Valley and see empty lots on so many street corners? One woman who is fed up and looking for answers emailed Action News about a trash filled lot in her North Las Vegas neighborhood. So who is responsible for cleaning up this eyesore next door?
"It is really despicable at this moment," explained Judy Horstman.
Judy has lived near Cheyenne and Valley for seven years. Everyday she says the drive out of her neighborhood get uglier.
"There's all kinds of printing all over the buildings and it's really an eyesore to the community," said Judy.
In addition to the graffiti there are mattresses, a chair, bottles, papers and other junk people have dumped over the years in this empty lot.
"I don't know who owns this land here if they're in town or they're out of town and who is responsible to clean up the mess that is here," wondered Judy.
Judy left several messages with the City of North Las Vegas but says no one ever called her back. That's why she reached out to Action News.
We did some research and learned something interesting from the county about the owners of this land. They haven't paid their property taxes in three years, so the county is taking steps to put the land up for sale at auction. But the owners are still responsible for maintaining it.
"It hurts the homeowners that are here that are honestly trying to keep their property nice," said Judy.
We also contacted the City of North Las Vegas and they opened a code enforcement case on the area. They very same day they came out and are planning to clean it up soon. Judy hopes the message gets across that it's not right or legal to leave trash there.
"As soon as we can get this corrected for the area it would be really great," said Judy.
We are going to keep in touch with the City on when the trash gets hauled away. They depend on those in the community to be their eyes on the street so if you see illegal dumping going on speak up. Call and report it at 633-1677. If you live in another part of the Valley and want to report it, click here to find out how.
