Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- A one-year-old girl is in the hospital after nearly drowning Wednesday afternoon.

Las Vegas police say the near-drowning happened at about 1 p.m. Wednesday in the 1000 block of Prairie Dove Avenue, near Spring Mountain and Hualapai Way.

The child was found in a parking lot near Spring Mountain and Fort Apache and was taken to Summerlin Hospital in critical condition.

"It's a very small child and we have a lot of adults who are concerned about the well-being of a family member," Sergeant Eric Kerns said. "We're concerned about the child and about preventing these kinds of things from happening."

Family friend Pauline Bradley says the child's relatives were home at the time, but the toddler slipped through a sliding back door and into a pool that was not child-proofed.

Bradley has a request and advice. She says, "Prayers from the community. And people with pools and have little kids around them? They need to put a gate up and stuff because this could happen to them."

Detectives are investigating what happened and interviewing possible witnesses.
