MGM employees donate school supplies to local teachers
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- 2,000 Clark County teachers were invited to The Mirage for an appreciation day event on Tuesday as they prepare to head back to the classroom.
Teachers lined up around the hallway inside The Mirage Event Center, eager to get their hands on a few much-needed school supplies.
"It's a sign of what's going on in our community," Jocelyn Bluitt-Fisher, who helped coordinate the MGM event, said. "Times are hard, budget cuts in the schools mean that many teachers have to go into their own pockets to come up with resources for the classroom."
"I take a certain amount out of my check, every check I get and spend it on the classroom," a 4th grade teacher at the event said. "I spend a lot of money on my kids."
Other teachers at The Mirage on Tuesday echoed her words.
"I've heard stories of teachers spending up to $3,000 of their own money," a 2nd grade teacher said.
The event helped ease that financial burden, giving teachers the opportunity to pick from items on tables stacked high with school supplies.
The items were donated by MGM employees, who collected more than 100,000 school supply items for local teachers.
"It's like Christmas in August," Lecylivi Goss, a 2nd grade teacher, said. "A teacher's dream. Backpacks, paper, Kleenex, pencils...I love it."
