Local teachers face layoffs after arbitrator rules in favor of union

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Failed negotiations between Clark County School District and the Clark County Education Association could mean hundreds (if not over a thousand) layoffs.

Now CCSD is scrambling to rework its budget by May 16, 2012 facing about a $63 million deficit.

It still remains unclear exactly how many pink slips will be issued. Although, CCSD had previously said more than 1,000 positions are at stake.

But, with fewer teachers on board, could your kid's class size get larger?

"We've tried to staff our buildings at 100 percent because I heard clearly from parents that they wanted the class size to be as small is it can," explains Superintendent Dwight Jones. "It's going to be difficult to sustain that, but before I say 'yes' or 'no' we're going to really dive back into the budget and see if there's anything that we can find to make the pink slips as few as possible."

However, the teachers union says class sizes shouldn't go up because staffing doesn't need to be cut.

"The district is saying that the solution to this decision is to increase class sizes. We cannot disagree more strongly," says Ruben Murillo, President of the Clark County Education Association.

CCEA argues the school district has the money somewhere in its budget, pointing to money in the district's fund balance.

"If they use part of that ending fund balance they can absolutely avert layoffs," says Murillo.

"Actually the money just doesn't exist," insists Superintendent Jones.  "I'd be surprised if they say that to you with a straight face."

Despite the continued squabbling, the arbitrator's ruling is final. Which means, according to the school district, layoffs are inevitable.

CCSD must present a balanced budget to its Board of Trustees for final approval by May 16th.

Superintendent Jones says pink slips may be issued by, as early as, the end of May.
