Car strikes, kills senior woman on Las Vegas sidewalk

CREATED Apr. 13, 2012

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- An evening walk turned deadly for a senior woman when she was struck on the sidewalk.

It happened around 5:40 p.m. on Friday as the woman was walking on East Owens Avenue near Teton Street.

Police say a Dodge Neon veered off the road and knocked the 63-year-old woman to the ground. She was rushed to the hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later.

Neighbors say the victim walked down their busy street every day.

Jessica Mejia translated the devastating news for the woman's family.

"They're pretty sad. They were crying, and it hurts," explained Mejia.

The 23-year-old driver now responsible for a death reportedly returned to the roadway after striking the woman.

Police say she waited on scene for investigators to arrive and is cooperating.

"[I feel] not safe, knowing that my kids play in the front yard, and they can be hit by a car," said neighbor Brenda Aviles, a mother of five.

Still no word on what caused the driver of the Neon to lose control. Investigators did not say if drugs or alcohol could have played a role in the accident.

This incident marks the 39th traffic-related fatality in Metro's jurisdiction this year.
