22nd annual AIDS Walk scheduled for April 15

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- The 22nd annual AIDS Walk Las Vegas will take place this weekend on April 15 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway.

Las Vegas magicians Penn & Teller will once again be the grand marshals and leaders of the Penn & Teller Challenge AIDS Walk Team.

Chris Saldana, anchor of 8 News Now, is the master of ceremonies.

Other notable guests include Lauren Michaels, KLUC 98.5 host; Dustin Carlson, X 107.5 Afternoon Show host; Mark and Mercedes, co-hosts of Mix 94.1's Mark & Mercedes in the Morning; DJ Axis; Melody Sweets from "Absinthe" at Caesars Palace; the cast from "Thunder Down Under" at the Excalibur; the cast of "Fantasy" at the Luxor; Sean and John Schott from "VEGAS! The Show" at Planet Hollywood; the Desert Pines High School Marching Band; Mayor Carolyn Goodman; Congresswomen Dina Titus and Shelley Berkley; and several others.

Over the past twenty years, Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN) AIDS Walk has become the largest fundraiser of the year for the nonprofit organization. In 2011, more than 8.500 people walked, raising more than $461,000.

Sign in begins at 8 a.m. April 15 for teams and individuals. The opening ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. and the walk will commence at 10:30. A closing ceremony, followed by a food truck roundup and picnic, will be held at noon.

Individuals of all ages are encouraged to participate. Registration will be on the north side of the UNLV student union building. Public parking will be available throughout the campus.

Registration leading up to the walk is free, but a minimum donation of $50 per person is encouraged and includes an official AIDS Walk T-shirt. Participants may register as individuals, join an existing team or start their own team and are eligible for prizes based on their fundraising efforts.  Walkers and teams may also join the Penn & Teller Challenge, where all funds raised by the team will be matched by AIDS Walk Grand Marshals and Las Vegas Strip headliners, Penn & Teller.  For additional information and to register, please visit www.afanlv.org.
