Police stress gun safety after 2 children shoot themselves

By Molly Waldron. CREATED Dec 15, 2011

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Police are stressing the need for guns to be locked up after two children reportedly shot themselves, one fatally.

On Tuesday, a 10-year-old boy was killed by an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at home in southwest Las Vegas. Later that night, a 13-year-old girl was critically injured from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in the northeast part of the Valley.

"In both cases the juveniles obtained firearms from the home immediately prior to the incident," police said in a statement on Thursday. "Tragedies such as these should remind gun owners of their absolute responsibilty to secure all firearms within their home."

Authorities recommend locking up guns where they are safely secured but accessible in case of emergency, and keeping ammunition stored separately.

Children should be taught to avoid touching guns inside the home and to tell an adult if they find a firearm.
