Las Vegas lawyer takes plea in HOA fraud probe

Las Vegas, NV (AP) -- A Las Vegas criminal defense attorney is the latest to take a plea deal in a federal probe of homeowner associations steering business to favored attorneys and businesses.

David Amesbury pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracies to commit bank and wire fraud. He agreed to testify for the prosecution.

He's the eighth person to plead guilty since a political consultant pleaded in August to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud. Amesbury is the first to plead guilty to more than one charge.

Defendants are accused of scheming to control southern Nevada homeowner association boards of directors to funnel legal work and building contracts to unnamed law firms and construction companies.

The investigation became public three years ago with raids of Las Vegas-area law firms, homeowner association offices and other businesses.
