Family of murdered former Faith Lutheran student offers reward to catch killer
Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- It's been nearly three weeks since 22-year old Michael Portaro was gunned down outside the Tenaya Creek Brewery. Police still haven't found his killer. Now, grieving parents speak out for the first time as they search for justice.
"To our son's killer, I hope you're watching this right now. My message to you is this, I only wish you knew Mikey before you decided to take him away from us, because if you knew him, you never would have done what you did," Michael's Portaro's father, Richard Portaro says.
Richard Portaro and his wife Cynthia lost their son in a brutal murder. After days and days and no killer is caught, they announced their raising money, with the help of their friends and loved ones, to offer a reward. Crime Stoppers rewards max out at $2,000. The Portaro's reward will go much higher.
"Somebody may not be motivated with $2,000 to turn in their friend, family member, but 5, 10,15, 25-thousand they'll probably think twice about it," Richard says.
22-year old Michael Portaro was killed around 11:30 at night, March 30th, just outside the Tenaya Creek Brewery near Cheyenne and Tenaya. He was handing out fliers for a hip-hop show, where he dances. Cynthia now wears the shirt Michael once did on stage.
"The police recovered this from Mike's car and gave it to us so I wear it a lot," she says.
But clinging to their faith, the Portaro's say they're not out for revenge, just justice and closure.
A reward fund has been set up at the Service 1st Bank of Nevada under the "Michael Portaro Reward Fund". The bank has two locations in the valley, one on 8349 W. Sunset Road and one on 8965 S. Eastern Avenue.
The family is sending out emails tonight to their friends, family and members of the Faith Lutheran community.
