CMA Awards 2013: Album of the Year nominees

Country radio may largely be male-dominated. but women sure made their voices heard this year, especially when it came to some of the most memorable albums released. Although two of the year's finest by female acts -- Ashley Monroe's "Like a Rose" and "Annie Up" by Pistol Annies -- didn't make it into the final five, their presence is nevertheless sensed in the strong showing of one of the year's most pleasant surprises, the debut album from Kacey Musgraves. Kacey tied Taylor Swift, a nominee here for her spectacular "Red," for the most CMA nods this year, with six. Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" managed to score three consective chart-toppers at radio, so all is not lost when it comes to airplay for the ladies after all. Blake Shelton earned raves (and three huge chart hits) for "Based on a True Story..." and as the reigning Entertainer of the Year that could give him an advantage here. But it's Little Big Town who should walk away with this honor for the platinum-selling "Tornado," a rich, rewarding blend of dazzling harmonies, expert song choice and pristine production.
