Steve Tran of Northern California had forgotten that he'd purchased a Mega Millions ticket prior to the Dec. 17 drawing. Two weeks later, however, he's a mega millionaire.
According to CNN, "Tran, who declined to speak to reporters but told his story to lottery officials, bought his winning ticket at a San Jose gift shop and put it in a pile of other lottery tickets that he bought in other towns while making runs as a delivery driver, the lottery said."
After a family vacation, Tran remembered to check his ticket. "Tran told lottery officials that he 'woke up in the middle of the night' and remembered: 'I think I went to San Jose,'" reports the Los Angeles Times. "At 3 a.m. Monday . . . he gave his wife a smile and a hug, and then left a message for his boss: 'I'm really sorry boss. I hit the jackpot. I don't think I'm going to come in today, tomorrow, or ever.'"
Ira Curry, the other Mega Millions winner, claimed her $173.8 lump-sum the day after the numbers were called. The winning numbers of the $648 million lotto were 8, 14, 17, 20, and 39, with 7 as the Mega Ball.
Tran has 60 days to choose how he'll claim his prize.
