‘How I Met Your Mother’ slammed for ‘racist’ episode

By Phyllis Stark. CREATED Jan 16, 2014

Fans of CBS’s long-running sitcom “How I Met Your Mother” lashed out at the show this week after it aired an episode many thought was racist.

“Viewers were angered that members of the all-white principal cast dressed in stereotypical Asian clothing and donned ‘yellowface’ for Monday night’s episode,” reports the New York Daily News, which called the episode “tasteless.” The show was intended to be a tribute to Kung Fu movies.

The episode found “Jason Segel's character learning Kung Fu moves for a long-running joke about slapping Neil Patrick Harris's character in the face. His martial arts ‘teachers’ were played by his costars — Harris, Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders and Alyson Hannigan,” the Daily News reports.

The creation of a #HowIMetYourRacism thread on Twitter led show producers to issue a formal apology.

"With Monday's episode, we set out to make a silly and unabashedly immature homage to Kung Fu movies, a genre we've always loved," creator Carter Bays tweeted. "But along the way we offended people. We're deeply sorry, and we're grateful to everyone who spoke up to make us aware of it.

"We try to make a show that's universal, that anyone can watch and enjoy,” his statement continued. “We fell short of that this week and feel terrible about it. To everyone we offended, I hope we can regain your friendship, and end this series on a note of goodwill.”

"How I Met Your Mother" is now in its ninth and final season.
