Russell Johnson, the beloved "Professor" on "Gilligan's Island," has died of kidney failure at 89 years old.
Constance, Johnson's third wife, told ABC News that "He died at home, peaceful, in his sleep at 5:21 a.m. today. [He was] a very brave guy who knew what he wanted, and he wanted to be at home."
A native of Pennsylvania, Johnson resided in Washington. He leaves behind his wife and Kim, his daughter.
Former '60s cast mate Dawn Wells, who played "Mary Ann" on "Gilligan's Island" shared her grief on Facebook: "My 2 favorite people are now gone. The Professor past [sic] away this morning. My heart is broken."
"Gilligan's Island" remains Johnson's most iconic role, although he appeared on several other TV shows and film including: "The Adventures of Superman," "The Twilight Zone" and "Newhart."
