Journalist Robin Roberts, a "Good Morning America" anchor, used Facebook to reveal publicly for the first time on Sunday that she's a lesbian. The 53-year-old Roberts, who spent part of this year and last battling a life-threatening illness, posted a year-end message on her social media page that revealed the existence of a "long time girlfriend."
Wrote Roberts: "I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together."
reports that "Amber" is Amber Laign, "a licensed massage therapist [who] has a private practice specializing in patients recovering from injuries. They have been together for 10 years after meeting through mutual friends."
Roberts' Facebook post also included a photo of herself and her dog, KJ, who temporarily had to live elsewhere while Roberts battled the rare blood disorder myelodysplastic syndrome. Diagnosed last year, Roberts required a bone marrow transplant to recover from the disease. She previously battled breast cancer in 2007 before going into remission, and has been public about her health issues.
"Reading this comforts me and I hope the same for you: 'If you are depressed, you are living in the past. If you are anxious, you are living in the future. If you are at peace, you are living in the present,'" she wrote in her post. "At this moment I am at peace and filled with joy and gratitude."
reports that "It was ABC's Roberts whom President Barack Obama chose in May 2012 for his landmark interview to acknowledge his support for same-sex marriage." CNN also says friends and co-workers have "long known" about Roberts' sexuality.
