The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident.

EARLIER STORY

A vacationing Georgia man is dead and his 9-year-old daughter is in critical condition after a freak accident Sunday afternoon on a Florida beach.

According to the Associated Press, a 1972 Piper Cherokee airplane was forced to crash land on a remote Florida Gulf Coast beach. Ommy Irizarry, 36, and his 9-year-old daughter Oceana happened to be walking on the beach at the same time.

Officials told the Sarasota Herald Tribune that the man and his daughter were either hit by the plane or by debris. A woman who was with the pair was treated for stress-induced cardiac arrest after the incident.

Irizarry was pronounced dead at the scene. His daughter was airlifted to All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Officials say that the pilot radioed the Venice Municipal Airport and told them that he was having trouble with his plane and would have to land on the beach. Neither the pilot nor his passenger were injured in the emergency landing.

Witnesses say they don't believe that the small group on the beach heard the plane coming.

The beach, located south of Venice Municipal Airport, was evacuated immediately after the incident, which happened at about 2:45 p.m. July 27.

The plane lost a wheel and damaged its wing and propeller in the landing.
