Omaha, NE -- An incredible sight could cause headaches for drivers using a busy Omaha street.
A large water main broke at 85th & Center St. around 10:30am Monday. Metropolitan Utilities District crews repaired that break, and another one at 87th & Center St. Water was shooting 30-40 feet in the air. Forty businesses and homes were without water for most of the day.
“For us as a hardware store, the water shutoff isn't too bad, but other than that it's more of the traffic holdup is what's causing problems for the shopping center," said Bud Dodson, Floor Manager at Westlake Ace Hardware.
Traffic quickly came to a stop as there was only one lane each way on Center St. The busy thoroughfare has seen its fair share of construction work in the last few years. Some lanes were closed for months during construction in the same area of the break.
MUD says it's still unclear what caused these water main breaks. The most populated place in this area, the Westside Middle School, did not lose water. MUD says water was restored at 4:15pm Monday, while crews continue to repair the road.
