Vala's Pumpkin Patch a Tradition of Growing

Gretna, NE- It's only open 42 days a year, but Vala's pumpkin patch off 180th in Gretna means business.

"It takes 632 employees to get this thing running everyday," Tim Vala, owner and pumpkin farmer said.

The farm's first employees were just the Vala family. Tim, his wife Jan, and their three daughters Kirsten, Kyla and Kelsey. Today, the farms hundred of employees tend to 55 acres of pumpkins and a variety of activities on hand.From hayback rides, to pig derby races to an robotic dragon that smashes pumpkins, Vala is always thinking of things to add.

"We have a bunch of ideas. It's choosing the ideas that's the hard part," he said.

Vala's is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. They're open 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.Friday and Saturday.
