Omaha, NE - 19 year old Mikael Loyd is in jail, booked for first degree murder. Police believe he killed his girlfriend and dumped her body in a grave. We found out, Loyd is a troubled teen. his life surrounded by drugs and mental illness. His heartbroken family tells us everything. We're protecting their identity at their request.
"Regardless if there was love involved to walk away. Same for her you know." That's the advice a relative gave Mikael Loyd, a young man who moved to Omaha three years ago. It's here he met his girlfriend Melissa Rodriguez.
The relationship was an unhealthy battle for two years, ""There was a lot of lying and sneaking around just to be with each other," says Loyd's family member. Court documents show Rodriguez called Omaha police in June, she said Loyd grabbed her by her arms. Loyd's family says the abuse went both ways. "What he did was wrong 110-percent as far as putting his hands on a woman but it was both sides that were taking parts in this," Loyd's family says they saw bruises and scratches on him. They tried to intervene and put a stop to the relationship.
"Her family knew just like our family knew of the relationship and how bad it was getting. Both parties tried to step in. We talked to her family numerous times as far as if we'd seen her with him we notified her family right away to say, hey - she's with him and she shouldn't be with him," says Loyd's relative.
According to his family, he has a history of mental illness. They also believe the 19-year old was on drugs. A combination hard to address and hard to overcome. "We tried to put that into him - instill that into him that you need to want more and better for yourself. The relationship can wait and get yourself together." Now, the family says they'll walk with Loyd through the justice system, hoping they'll be able to address his mental illness. "Our prayers go out to their family and we're just praying for Mikael and see the outcome of this situation."
