Omaha, NE- They are questions a family wants answered.
"How did he get out? How long had he been out." asks Mikael Loyd's family, who doesn't want to be identified.
Omaha Police released their timeline of events Tuesday leading up to the murder of Melissa Rodriguez.
They say it began August 8th, when Mikael Loyd walked into OPD Headquarters to tell them there was a warrant out for his arrest.
"When I got the call from the detective and he said that Mikael needed help right away and he was very concerned with Mikael and his state of mind and he could see he was suffering from mental illness." say the Loyd family.
Police say they placed Loyd into emergency protective custody at Lasting Hope.
"He called me to let me know Mikael was there, and he was safe under the doctor's care because of his medical condition." says the Loyd family.
On Monday, August 12th, police say Loyd called 911 from Lasting Hope and wanted to turn himself in for a misdemeanor warrant.
When officers arrived, they say they were under the impression he was still in protective custody so he could not leave the facility.
Two days later, on August 14th, police say Mikael Loyd was released from Lasting Hope. He later confessed to strangling Rodriguez that day.
KMTV Action 3 News asked OPD about the process of Loyd's released, "did a doctor release him?" or "did he just walk?"
Police will only tell us he was no longer in emergency protective custody on the 14th.
Loyd's family wants those questions answered too.
"I also would like to know how Mikael got out, did the doctor discharge Mikael, was Mikael not being supervised and he got out, we need answers." asks Loyd's family.
Melissa Rodriguez's body was found the next day, August 15th at the Graceland Cemetery.
Loyd's family says he was suffering from depression and other mental illnesses and has been in and out of treatment his whole life.
