Omaha, NE -- Another person is killed in almost the same spot this week. It's the second homicide police are investigating near 27th & Spencer St.
Police respond to a Shotspotter alert at 26th & Spencer St. just after midnight Thursday. Officers find 23-year-old Antone Cooper dead in the yard of the housing area. Someone also shot Deon Jackson, but he is expected to be ok. Almost two years earlier, Cooper was actually shot at the same housing area. A friend couldn't believe what happened.
"We were regular hanging out, and somebody came through shooting. They got a good dude, he wasn't anything like that, it just wasn't for him he didn't deserve it. He was a good guy," said Brontae Evans.
Just hours before Cooper was gunned down, a mother pleaded for peace at a vigil in South Omaha Wednesday night. Twins Kevin and Branden McIntyre were struck by gunfire just yards away from where Cooper was. Branden survived, but Kevin died. Their mother asked for no retaliation.
"What the Lord showed me about this situation is that we are basically chasing a ghost. We're getting angry, we're getting upset, and we want retaliation after the person or culprit that has done harm to our loved ones but it's actually not them,” said Lisa McIntyre.
OPD says investigators will cover all angles, but it's too early to tell if these murders are connected. No one has been arrested in Thursday’s shooting.
County Attorney Don Kleine said after Sunday's shooting, a man turned himself into police. But after interviewing him, Kleine said the shooting appeared to be justified, and he won't be charged.
Police are asking witnesses to come forward. If you know anything about Thursday morning's murder, call Crimestoppers at 444-STOP. You can remain anonymous, and could get a cash reward.
