Omaha, Neb.-- A day after a stray bullet struck and killed 5-year-old Payton Benson, her family addressed the public for the first time.
The family thanked the community for overwhelming support.
Payton's mom, Tabitha Manning, asked for people in the community to put their guns down. She said she wants her daughter's memory to be love not hate.
Manning said her 4-year-old son was there when Payton was shot. He told his siblings what happened, and Manning had to tell them it was true.
"It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do," Manning said.
Omaha City Councilman Ben Gray is Payton's great-uncle.
He said, "Nobody's going to turn us around. That's not going to happen. This community's going to move forward. This family's going to move forward."
A fund for Payton's family is set up at American National Bank.
