Omaha, NE -- Our investigation continues as we look into Sergio Perez and his past, including where he was working in Omaha. KMTV Action 3 News has tracked down one roofer that Perez worked for. They are a roofing company out of San Antonio, TX that was in town for a few months. They apparently met Perez when they got to the metro.
Prosecutors charged 19-year-old Sergio Perez with the murder of 93-year-old Louise Sollowin at her South Omaha home in July. Police have told us Perez is an illegal immigrant, who worked as a roofer, and was only in Omaha for a short time. He also went under the name Sergio Arciniega Ramirez.
A photo posted to his Facebook page shows Perez working on a Southwest Omaha roof, which led us to a contractor, and they told KMTV they subcontracted the work to someone else. The local subcontractor said they subcontracted the job to roofers in town from San Antonio, Texas. KMTV contacted the roofer, Sergio Espinoza, and spoke with one of the men who came to Omaha.
They say they met Perez at the Travel Inn Motel at 108th & L Street., where he was staying. They hired him, and he worked on a couple of homes for them for 2-3 days. They were surprised to find out what he was actually accused of doing to be thrown in jail. They were also surprised to find out that Perez was an illegal immigrant without proper documentation. We're told Perez has cousins who live in the Nebraska area, and he would stay with them from time to time. They didn’t check Perez’ documentation because they knew he had a family in the metro. It's unclear how many other companies Perez may have worked around Omaha before being arrested.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement say they do investigate worksite operations who may have hired illegal immigrants. But they won't identify a business they're looking into, so no business is unreasonably harmed.
