Omaha Officer Dies Of Flu

CREATED Feb. 21, 2014

Omaha, NE - Friday, Methodist hospital confirmed 43-year-old Omaha police officer Greg Hamill died on Wednesday.  Officer Hamill was an organ donor so even in death he helped save lives.

He put his life on the line everyday for twelve years protecting the city from crime.  "He was one of the best people I've ever known, personally he's meant a lot to me and a lot to the department," said former street partner Craig Wylie.

The local hero fell victim to H1N1.  His organs were harvested Friday morning.

Hamill's sudden death shocked everyone in OPD uniform.  Wylie describes his close friend as a man of wisdom and many words.  "He could always make a short story long and everything you talked to him about turned into something bigger and better."  Bigger and better, similar to the way Hamill lived life.

There is a fund set up at the Omaha Police credit union in Greg Hamill's name.  Funds will help his wife and two young children with death related expenses.

The funeral is Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Westside Church at 150th & west Dodge road.
