Omaha, NE -- A 62-year-old woman was killed Friday afternoon when a semi hit her as she crossed the street near 36th & L St.
Police say the woman was crossing 36th Street heading west to her apartment. A semi turned north from Ed “Babe” Gomez Avenue and hit her. Paramedics tried to resuscitate her, but she died at the scene. There were no crosswalks at the intersection. The driver was taken to police headquarters for questioning and testing.
"We don't believe that he was intoxicated at the time, but it appears it was just an accident,” said OPD Officer James Shade. "She was attempting to cross right as the semi was attempting to turn. I don't know if he could see her with how high the cab is but she was hit and fatally struck."
The woman lived at the Burlington Square Apartments just feet away from where she was hit. It was the red cart at the scene that made neighbors realize who it was. The 62-year-old woman was always seen pushing the cart to the grocery store.
"Every day, every day I saw her. She was really nice with the kids,” her neighbor, David Camacho explained. "She always was transporting everything with that little red cart over there.”
Police haven't identified the woman yet. Though they believe this was an accident, authorities will turn over their findings to the county attorney's office.
