Dog Starved To Death, Found Dead In Alley

By Marcus Cooper. CREATED Jan 15, 2014 - UPDATED: Jan 15, 2014

Omaha, NE - The images are hard to look at, but they show a very real case of animal abuse.

"This is a very serious animal cruelty charge," said Mark Langan, the Vice President of Field Operations for the Nebraska Humane Society. "You can't just starve a dog to death and dump it in an alley."

On Monday, animal control officers were called to the alley near 33rd and Decatur Streets.

A neighbor had found a dead pit bull wrapped in bed sheets and a pair of jeans.

The dog was frozen and emaciated.

Veterinarians did a necropsy and found the dog did in fact starve to death.

"There's no excuse for allowing your dog to be found in that condition in the alley, wrapped up in a blanket and dumped like a piece of trash," said Langan.

Treasure Baker lives right near the alley and said she has seen the dog around the neighborhood.

"He was up there on 33rd, and then he was up by the old cemetery," said Baker.

For both officials and neighbors, this is something they never get used to.

"Even though we deal with cases like this on a regular basis, it's tough for the employees here at the shelter to see a dog in this condition, simply dumped in an alley," said Langan. "This is a tough job these animal control officers have, and that's why we really want to find the person responsible for this crime."

The person responsible is looking at a felony charge of animal cruelty, which carries a sentence of up to five years in prison.

The humane society is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Anyone with information is asked to all the humane society at (402)-444-7800.
