Omaha, NE - Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine has filed a first degree murder charge against Sergio Perez for the death of Louise Sollowin. Kleine upgraded the assault charge because the victim in the case died Wednesday.
Police say 19-year old Sergio Perez beat and raped the 93-year-old woman in her south Omaha home. The victim's daughter found her mother in her bedroom covered in blood around 9 a.m. on July 21st.
Kleine said Sollowin died from blunt force trauma, and Perez didn't have a weapon.
"It's a horrific set of circumstances that someone could do this to another human being," Kleine explained.
Police believe this crime was random, and the victim and accused did not know each other. Perez will be arraigned on July 26th.
Authorities say Perez was an illegal immigrant who had been in Omaha for a short time. He had no criminal history, and police haven't identified a permanent address. The jail classified him as a "floater". Officials did say that he had been working for an unnamed roofing company.
U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement have lodged an "immigration retainer" for Perez so he would likely be deported once he finishes his sentence, if convicted.
