Matt Fields' Long Journey

By Garrett Gordon. CREATED Apr 24, 2014

Omaha, NE - Matt Fields spent six years in Tampa's minor league system before he decided to call it quits.  He temporarily fell out of love with the game.  He became a baggage handler at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

The break didn't last long though.  He eventually decided to give baseball another shot.  He went to the Frontier League hoping to get one more shot at his dream.  Within 30 games the Kansas City Royals gave him a chance to play for their single A club.

He was sensational for the rest of the season at that level.  Last year he jumped up to double A ball and set the single season home run record for Northern Arkansas.  This year, he got off to a stellar start.  He hit safely in 18 straight games to begin the season and he's currently hitting .354.
