Omaha, Ne- MECA board member Jamie Gutierrez Mora is a no-show for a meeting with Mayor Jean Stothert.
According to Nebraska Watchdog, Gutierrez Mora texted the Mayor that she would not meet with her today to discuss questions surrounding her eligibility to serve on the board.
Gutierrez Mora was appointed by the Omaha City Council to serve on the MECA Board last May. To do so, members must live in Douglas County. She told the council she lived at an address on 19th Street in South Omaha. But according to the Sarpy County Assessors website, she lives at a home in Bellevue.
An official investigation was launched Friday by Secretary of State John Gale.
According to Nebraska Watchdog, Stothert says she received a text message late last night, canceling the meeting today. The mayor replied saying she expected her at 9 a.m.
Gutierrez Mora has sent out an email to the news media saying she is qualified to be on the board which oversees the downtown arena and baseball stadium.
Gutierrez Mora said her life has always been in Omaha and released this in a statment: " In regard to the notion of a crime, I have done nothing inappropriate. However, a few people continue to sensationalize this outcome in hopes of intimidating me into sacrificing my beliefs and succumbing to their demands. I want you to know that this is a moral issue for me now. Some have suggested to me that this is not only an attack on me but also an attack on women and Hispanics. I hope this attack is not motivated by hate and pray the truth will bring people to better understand the situation and act reasonably in moving toward an appropriate resolution."
