MECA Board Member Resigns
CREATED Sep. 18, 2013
Omaha, NE- Jamie Gutierrez Mora is stepping down from the MECA board amid questions over her place of residency.
Gutierrez Mora was appointed by the Omaha City Council to serve on the board last May. She told the council she lived at an address on 19th Street in south Omaha. But according to the Sarpy County Assessors website, she lives at a home in Bellevue.
Gutierrez Mora released this statement in a letter to the media about her residency before the decision came for her to step down:
"Based on my 19th street residence and extensive connections to Omaha in every other aspect of my life, when I registered to vote in Douglas County in December 2012, I believed I had the right to vote in south Omaha."
The City Council says the decision for Mora to resign is due to recent confusion over eligibility rules and the lack of consensus on a resolution to the matter.
An official investigation into Gutierrez Mora's Douglas County voter registration was launched Friday by Secretary of State John Gale.
Earlier this week, Gutierrez Mora texted Mayor Stothert that she would not meet with her on Monday to discuss questions surrounding her eligibility to serve on the board. Stothert said she expected her that morning, but Gutierrez Mora did not show up.
The council also says they believe Gutierrez Mora is a capable and experienced board member with deep ties to Omaha.
The City Council will now move forward to fill the vacant seat.
